NEW YORK, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Shares in communications equipment maker Tellabs Inc (TLAB:$6.15,00$0.25,004.24%) rose 4.4 percent on Tuesday after the company announced it would resume share repurchases.
Tellabs (TLAB:$6.15,00$0.25,004.24%) announced late on Monday it would buy back up to $200 million in shares over the next four quarters under a previously-announced repurchase program. The company had curtailed buybacks since the fourth quarter of 2008 as it evaluated its use of cash.
Analysts said Tellabs (TLAB:$6.15,00$0.25,004.24%) , which has no debt, would have a robust balance sheet even after more repurchases and some said the move showed it was not planing on major acquisitions.
"The buyback reiterates management's commentary that Tellabs (TLAB:$6.15,00$0.25,004.24%) is not interested in using its $2.4 billion cash balance to make a large-scale acquisition," said Steven O'Brien, analyst at J.P. Morgan.
Tellabs (TLAB:$6.15,00$0.25,004.24%) shares rose 26 cents to $6.16 by late morning trade.
The company had also announced that Chairman Michael Birck plans to sell up to 3 million Tellabs (TLAB:$6.15,00$0.25,004.24%) stock on the open market to repay family-related debts. (Reporting by Ritsuko Ando, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)
